Online banking isn’t new, though the way we bank online today is very different from the traditional method of in-person banking. In the past, we visited a physical location and spoke with an on-site representative or teller, often confined to their limited hours of operation, weekday and weekend hours, including holidays, and, well, you already know. With on-line banking, your accounts are available 24 -hours a day, 7-days a week and at your fingertips, on mobile and desktop devices, Android and Apple.

For anyone done dealing with the major banks, their high fees and penalties, there are alternatives. Chime is a new banking startup offering fee-free checking and savings accounts, and it’s gaining popularity and growth.

As a member of a different fee-free online banking service with a small physical presence in your city or county, I decided to give Chime a try as an alternative account for my online merchant services like Square, PayPal, Venmo, etc. Because I kept my main employer direct deposit accounts with the service I’ve had the longest, I didn’t receive the promotional offer, which is fine, I do offer my own personal referral code (below) if you decide to make the switch yourself, we both receive a signup bonus.

There are several other startups similar to chime, at the time of writing this article the APR for chime is 1% which is higher than my current service. Keep in mind though that this can change at any time based on changing market rates, please do your own research.
